Yogyakarta Nov 13-16, 2007
We arrived in Yogyakarta just in time for a moonlight swim.
Thirteen dollars a night bagged us a room with A/C, a TV, free room-service breakfast, and a pool all to ourselves!
A motorbike taxi. We haven't ridden on one... yet.
We went to a bird market. It was a bit of a terrible place to go... aside from birds there were quite a few other animals in cramped cages.
They keep all types of birds in ornamental bamboo cages.
Bats are close enough to birds to sell in a bird market.
This poor owl looked like it had been caught from the wild to sell.
They also sell monkey heads. Actually these are just coconuts.
A shoe store.
Michelle and our cyclo driver.
On the steps of Borobudur, a 9th century Bhuddist monument and one of the biggest temples in the world.
Michelle seems really happy considering it's 6 in the morning. She must really like temples.
This carving is probably telling a very interesting story.
We had to wake up at 4:30am to get to the temples by sunrise. And it was sort of worth it.
Inside each of these bells is a statue of a full-sized Buddha. It's lucky to reach in and touch their hands or their feet, and we so totally did.
Gado-gado is an Indonesian dish served with peanut sauce.
Rawr!
We've made a lot of friends while traveling.
We've made a lot of friends while traveliTREE
Stupid ants.
Driving around to temples we saw a lot of interesting stuff.
Prambanan. This one is a Hindu site built around the same time as Borobudur.
Unfortunately it was badly damaged in an earthquake last year that killed 6000 people in the area.
One of the larger stupas. We weren't allowed to enter most of them because of structural damage from the earthquake.
Goats and cows run around the temple site. Fyl hates them all, Michelle takes 100 pictures per goat.
Fyl just hanging out.
Terima kasih means thank you in Indonesian.
Men hard at work repairing the earthquake damage.
An ancient Hindu statue. Many of the heads have been stolen by looters, so Fyl occasionally has to step in.
DINNER TIME!
The sultan's palace.
He wouldn't be smiling if he could feel the 100 degree heat.
Those sultans sure have nice ceilings.
They also have VULCAN EARS!
Fyl makes another friend.
The sultan's water palace. Michelle thinks that there is a Sultan of Swing joke to be had somewhere. So I guess this is it.
We wandered around some alleyways in the walled city. Here's a well used by the locals.
An old wall. The school boys in the picture asked Michelle to give them money while they ate KFC chicken. She said no. And I say WE'RE DONE WITH PICTURE COMMENTS HOORAY!
