Us taking a mini-bus up to Bromo. There were people on the roof and people on the floor.

The local people all farm on the steep sides of the mountains near the crater. The volcanic soil makes for good crops.

As you can see, we had no hope of making it to the volcano before it got dark.

We climbed up the steep side of the volcano in the dark. It was scary being on top of a volcano in the pitch black, especially with the smoke making it hard to breathe.

Around 4am we started up the side of the outer crater for what we were told was a good view of Bromo and also Mt Semeru, the biggest and most active volcano in Java.

The smoke had come down over the village and we had to cover our mouths not to choke on the sulfur.
